Dhulikhel Balthali Hiking

Dhulikhel, a historical town, is situated 30km southeast of Kathmandu, just past the edge of the Kathmandu Valley. At an elevation of 1550m above sea level, Dhulikhel lies just south of the Himalayas. This provides beautiful views of mountains as a backdrop of green hills. Historically, Dhulikhel has been the gateway to Tibet for traders traveling to Kathmandu. This legacy is still maintained by the Araniko Highway that passes from Kathmandu through Dhulikhel to the Tibetan border, Kodari. Numerous temples, shrines and medieval houses decorated with beautifully crafted windows and doors carry the essence of centuries-old Newari architecture.

Balthali is a small village located 45 km southwest of Kathmandu, a 10km drive by road from Dhulikhel. It lies on the foothills of the Mahabharat range, a series of hills spanning east to west parallel to the Himalayas. Natural pine forests coexist with terraced green paddy fields and traditional houses. There are several trails that pass through the villages and forests allowing travellers to enjoy both the natural and cultural beauty of this place. The forest is home to a variety of bird species, suitable for nature lovers and bird watchers. Two suspension bridges cross over deep gorges including the Roshi river, while green paddy fields, high hills and sub tropical pine forests make for a beautiful experience. The trekking guide will also explain the use of the trail as an ancient trade route connecting Tibet, Nepal and India.
